STS Satellite: Fusion of medical and electronics

What electronics can do in preventative medicine

Total amount of medical and elderly care cost is expected to reach approximately 90 trillion yen in 2025, which is double of that in last year due to the aging society, and establishment and execution of repression initiatives are urgent challenges.  Measures shifting focus on maintaining wellness and preventing disease from the conventional focus of diagnosis and treatment are demanded and there is higher expectation to create new industry by utilizing the electronics technology. In this Symposium, we will provide an outlook of the current challenges by introducing specific case studies and discuss future potential.

Contribution of the Electronics Industry to Realize the Healthy Aging Society

Keiichi Kawate
Visiting Professor, Scool of Medicine
Yokohama City University

To control the rising medical expenses associated with aging population,
realization of the healthy aging society is an urgent issue. The electronics industry can contribute on many occasions, such as, improving health literacy and lifestyle, supporting prevention and early detection of disease, less invasive treatment, and rehabilitation. To develop the new market for the healthy aging society, novel approach is required, such as, providing solutions for the diversified needs of the field at reasonable price, enabling continuous service in spite of small scale market. To achieve this purpose, the important thing is, to encourage multidiscipline electronics companies to enter this market, to deploy the accumulated technologies and the high productivity developed in the conventional consumer market to the new market, to share the development costs through standardization and open collaborative environment. The activities in Yokohama, leveraging the accumulation of electronics companies, is introduced.

Micro and Cost-reduction Development of Ultrasonographic Image Equipment

Hisashi    Tanaka
President & CEO
Global Health Co., Ltd.

The ultrasonographic image diagnostic equipment which was only for medical treatment was realized by making a development theme into "small size, a light weight, and budget prices." It is producing commercially as equipment only for body composition (fat, muscles) which can carry out "anyone is easy measurement always anywhere." It is a project result of industry, academia and government cooperation, this is strengthening inter-regional association organization so that it may strengthen further development organization, and it has developed into ":ultrasonic wave development studio from Yokohama." Aim at the development subject towards the future and commercial production of the new ultrasonographic image equipment which is micro/cost reduction which made full use of semiconductor technology, and an individual can use by this at home by the Yokohama medical-engineering collaboration, An old track record and the future course of a dream are described for what are development and market creation tackled and business deployment is carried out.
